Nikki's Story Featured in New Book The Unknown Warrior

2024-08-30

We are honored to share that Nikki Scott, the Founder of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, has been featured in the newly released book The Unknown Warrior by John Nichol. This poignant and powerful book delves into the personal stories of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in military service, and the families who have been left behind.

Nikki’s story, as told in the book, recounts the devastating moment when she learned of her husband Corporal Lee Scott’s death in Afghanistan. With raw honesty, Nikki reflects on the painful experience of breaking the news to their young children, Kai and Brooke, and the long, heart-wrenching journey of bringing Lee home to the UK.

In the book, Nikki shares her struggle to cope with the overwhelming grief and the need for closure that came with her loss. “I still need to know that somebody was with him in his final moments,” Nikki says, expressing a sentiment that resonates deeply with many military families. Her courage in reliving these painful memories is not only a tribute to Lee’s memory but also a testament to the strength and resilience of those left behind.

Through her story, Nikki also sheds light on the importance of having a physical place to grieve. She speaks about the comfort she finds in visiting Lee’s grave, a place where she and her children can connect with him. This deeply personal reflection highlights a common struggle among bereaved families, especially those from past wars who never had the chance to bury their loved ones.

Nikki’s experience, as recounted in The Unknown Warrior, is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by military families. It was this experience that inspired Nikki to create Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved British Forces children. The charity provides vital support to children and young people who have experienced the loss of a parent in the armed forces, helping them to honor the memory of their loved ones while moving forward with their lives.

Reflecting on her inclusion in the book, Nikki said:

“It is an immense honor to be included in John Nicol’s The Unknown Warrior. Reliving those difficult moments is never easy, but I am deeply grateful to John for sharing our story. My hope is that through this book, more people will become aware of the challenges faced by bereaved military families and the support that Scotty’s Little Soldiers can offer them.”
