Nikki’s January in a Nutshell
Scotty’s Little Soldiers’ founder, Nikki, shares an update on the events of the past month, including opening a brand-new Scotty Lodge, attending our 2023 Get Stuff Done Day, and searching for talented new people to join Scotty’s team.
Hello,
I hope everyone’s year has got off to a good start! Mine certainly did. Earlier this month Scotty’s was able to purchase a new holiday home at Devon Cliffs, funded by Forces Support, for our bereaved military families to visit on Scotty Breaks throughout the year.
Scotty Breaks
The Scotty Breaks are a perfect chance for our members to make some new happy memories and a great environment to spark those important conversations about their loved one. When a parent has died there’s so much pain and heartache for their children, and sometimes just getting away from the house, having a change of scenery and enjoying a bit of time out can have a huge positive impact.
I remember going on holiday nine months after Lee’s death and watching our son, Kai, splash about in the pool. I realised it was the first time I’d seen him really laugh since his dad died. Scotty’s, and everything we’ve done, all began with that moment.
Scotty’s Get Stuff Done Day
Last week we held Scotty’s Team Day, otherwise known as our Get Stuff Done Day. It’s a yearly event attended by the whole Scotty’s team where we talk about our mission of supporting bereaved military children and young people and discuss how our plans for the coming year will help us achieve that. This year’s Get Stuff Done Day was held at the King’s Lynn Corn Exchange, which is such a great venue and meant we could project anything we needed onto the big screen!
We talked about everything from how we plan to raise awareness of the charity this year to our long-term goal of supporting 1000 bereaved military children and young people by 2030. It was a really productive day and was so useful for highlighting the things we want to focus on in 2023.
Join our team!
During the Get Stuff Done Day, we also discussed one of our most important plans for 2023 – growing our team. When I started Scotty’s back in 2010, I had no idea how big it would become, and as the number of bereaved military families we support increases so does the number of hands we need on deck. One of my favourite things about our team is just how talented everyone is. I honestly feel like we’ve got some of the most skilled, determined people in Norfolk working with us, and I can’t wait to bring even more aboard.
We’re currently looking for a Brand Manager to help develop individual supporter income, a Youth Worker Programme Lead to run our SPRINGBOARDER Programme for young adults aged 18-25, maternity cover for Grants and Trusts Fundraising, a Child and Young Person Activities Programme Lead which involves managing events and activities for our members, and Corporate Partnerships - someone to manage our relationships with corporate partners.
If you any of these sound like you, or you know someone they do, get in touch and help us support bereaved military children!
Nikki
