Summer time Scotty Breaks
The holidays are here and so it’s time for our summer time Scotty breaks! Every year we send hundreds of bereaved Forces families on respite breaks to give them the opportunity to make some new happy memories.
Scotty’s Little Soldiers Founder Nikki Scott’s original vision for the charity was to provide holiday breaks that children who have lost a parent in the British Armed Families could enjoy. The idea was simple. To remove them from their everyday struggle of dealing with their grief, and give them the opportunity to go somewhere new, try exciting activities and spend time as a family creating new memories. Some seven years on from the start of Nikki’s quest the charity is providing so much more than just Scotty Breaks but the respite opportunities are still a favourite with beneficiaries.
There are now 6 Scotty Lodges – fully equipped luxury mobile homes located on Haven Holiday Parks across the UK – as well as long weekend breaks at Center Parcs and weekend stays at theme park resorts such as Legoland available for families to enjoy.
“The idea was to have somewhere bereaved families could go and not have to worry about anything. The fridge has supplies, there are spare nappies in the cupboard, there are toys and games, there’s a high chair, everything a family could need. So, they can just rock up and begin to enjoy their time together – we even cover the cost of their fuel to get there. That’s what the Scotty Lodges are all about” Nikki Scott, Founder.
Scotty’s Chief Executive Stuart Robinson added “The breaks are available year-round but not surprisingly the busiest time of the year for us is the Summer. I would imagine the public probably don’t realise the work involved by the team in making these breaks available. Every Lodge has to be prepared to our high standards and during the summer this means quick turnarounds. All the Scotty Breaks are booked online via our Members Zone website – we’re effectively running an exclusive holiday business, only we never take a payment.”
“These breaks are so important to the families. It gives them a chance to get away which they may not have the opportunity to do otherwise. Children let their guard down so much more when they are relaxed and having fun so it’s a great opportunity for families to talk about their lost hero. It’s so much more than just a holiday” Nikki told us.
None of the hundreds of children who attend Scotty Breaks every year would be able to do so without the kind generosity of the British public. By fundraising and donating to Scotty’s Little Soldiers you are helping to provide opportunities like Scotty Breaks to children who have sacrificed so much.
