Nikki’s TAPS Trip
Scotty’s Little Soldiers Founder Nikki Scott was invited by U.S. charity TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) to attend their 23rd annual TAPS National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp in Washington D.C.
TAPS offers compassionate care to all those grieving the loss of a loved one who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces or as a result of their service and has been operating since 1994.
We asked Nikki to give us the run down on her trip and why it was such an important opportunity for both her and Scotty’s.
“The charity does similar work to that of Scotty’s, but having been supporting thousands of bereaved military families in America for many years, it now has some really well developed programmes and some fantastic ways to provide support to children who have lost a serving parent.
The Good Grief Camp is an opportunity for children from all over the U.S. to come together for the Memorial weekend in Washington. Every child is assigned a Mentor who they spend the weekend working with. I was lucky enough not only to experience the Mentor training in the days before the Camp but to also have the opportunity to be a Mentor myself! I was paired up with the amazingly brave Antonio who sadly lost his Daddy in the U.S. Army last year when he was just 4 years old.
It was such an amazing experience personally but I’ve also learnt so much that I’m sure we can look to bring over here to the UK to help support our own bereaved Forces children. The guys at TAPS have been amazing and are really keen to share their experiences and help in any way they can. It’s a really exciting opportunity and I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more soon.”
Nikki’s trip has been pretty full-on with action packed days but now she’s back we’ll be working on putting together a full debrief which we’ll share with you in the next week or so and helpfully some more information on some of those ideas she’s brought back with her.
